Students will begin learning how to identify birds in December. Students must have a bird guide before December 7. I will teach them how to use the guide. If we all get the same guide, it is easier. The book I prefer is Peterson's Guide to Eastern Birds. Anything with a copyright of at least 1985 will work. Last year I was able to get them for students at Amazon.com for a few dollars. They retail for around $25.00 and I was able to find them used for less than $5.00 in most cases. Students will also need to procure binoculars of at least 7X35. Seven is the magnification level. Ten is better. They will need the binoculars to see birds. They will need them by Christmas. My goal is to have students prepared so they can do a little birding over Christmas break. Bird seed in the yard allows you to view them while sipping hot chocolate after coming back from Christmas Morning Mass.
