Summer Reading Returns to OLHRS

Dear Parents and Students,

The benefits experienced this school year from the implementation of last summer’s reading program where evident this school year.  It is almost summer and time to relax and enjoy a good book again.  Students here at OLHRS will be experiencing many new adventures this summer through the pages of a book.  Each grade level from second to eighth grade will be required to read a book or books selected by the teachers.

Research has shown that a student can loose up to two months of reading comprehension skills during the summer vacation months.  By implementing a Summer Reading Program last year, our students where given the opportunity to maintain their own skills and even achieve above grade level reading skills to help them in the new school year.

The books required have been selected from your child’s reading curriculum.  You should look for your child’s grade level for the 2008-09 school year to find the book he/she is required to read.  Many other book selections are listed for you on our web site to encourage reading over the entire summer.  Parents of students in grades kindergarten and first grade have a suggested reading list to help your child learn to love books and to read with them.

When school resumes in the fall, the students will participate in class discussions, review highlights of their book, and participate in reading activities to reinforce reading skills.

Happy reading and have a wonderful summer vacation!

Reading Coordinator

·        Borders is an excellent resource in finding the titles that your child needs to complete their summer reading requirement.

·        Your local public library should have these books, but make sure your child will be able to bring that copy to school for the activities in the fall.
